A couple of years ago, I gave a 90 year old female friend of the family a necklace.  As you can imagine, this was a risky thing to do, because it depended so much on her tastes, and her lifestyle was far more higher-budget than mine.   So for her 90th birthday, I presented her with three necklaces I had made myself and asked her to choose the one she wanted. Make your 90-year-old grandmother, wife, or friend a gift basket or gift hamper. Put in a 90th birthday candle, a photo album, old-fashioned bulk candies (for the sake of her teeth, choose those you can suck on, rather than chew), and some soft, rich crackers and cheese.

Or watch her face light up when you give her a book about the Roaring 20's, her decade of birth. Only Yesterday: An Informal History of the 1920s is an entertaining account of the post-World War I period that begins with a detailed account of a day in the life of a "moderately well-to-do young couple" just after the Armistice of 1918. If her eyesight is still good, she'll love reading this on her own and remembering a time gone by - or her grandchildren, children or other relatives can spend quality time with her reading to her and sharing in the nostalgic memories. I can vouch for this book, as I read the book and found the style picturesque and the recounting of events fascinating.

Remember how you feel when you hear music from your youth? You can also get her a music CD of dance music from the 1920s and 1930s, which can be played at the birthday party as well.

My grandmother passed away at age ninety, just short of her ninety-first birthday.  She had a fabulous sense of humor and always loved writing poetry, usually with a mischievous, humorous bent, and many of my memories of her are of seeing her face alight with laughter. If the woman you're buying for has a healthy sense of humor, you have some great options for presents.
